What Lies Behind the Lies

Neon dreams
Streets of gold
Rainbow’s end
Treasures hold
Sunsets on the boulevard
An ace up your sleeve
Draw another card
The win’s not far
If you just believe

Flashing lights
Blinding stars
Dizzying heights
Oncoming cars
Take a drink
Roll the dice
Make a wish
Don’t think twice
Or you might
Notice the lies
Behind their eyes

The prompt is “orange lights and other lies” from Maria Giesbrecht @theguelphpoet on Instagram. April 23, National Poetry Month 2022.

No Such Thing as a Clean Slate

The light shines
And guides or blinds

The way is set

A back turned on the past
Passed regret

A marked heart
Bound to forget

Circumstance or chance

We all start the same they say
To justify the greed
When denying the need

Hate to help
A handout perpetuates
The cycle

The path
Is a thin line and
Quicksand doesn’t discriminate
Toss a coin to determine fate
Born too early or born too late
Not exactly born with a clean slate

Grand Plan

You birth a child you should care for but instead neglect.
You have what some others wish they could get.
Maybe there is a plan
That I don’t understand,
Or is the dice rolled to select?
